Born in Montreal to Egyptian and Lebanese parents, Neema is an award-winning writer and multi-disciplinary artist with 15+ years experience. She has four albums of songs and spoken word poetry, and a historical fiction youth novel in print and audiobook. She has toured internationally opening for artists such as Joe Cocker & Elton John, and was mentored by Leonard Cohen, who co-produced her 2nd album. Her song ‘For You’ feat. Emmylou Harris won runner-up in the International Acoustic Music Awards, and ‘Angel Undercover’ won finalist in the Canadian Songwriting Competition.

Journal of a Travelling Girl was published in October 2020 by Wandering Fox / Heritage House in Canada and Orca Books in the USA and went to second print in March 2021. The audiobook was released in September 2022 by Penguin Random House Canada. The book was shortlisted for three awards - two Canadian Children’s Book Centre awards, namely the Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction and Jean Little First-Novel Award and the Quebec Writer’s Federation Janet Savage Blachford Prize for Children’s and Young Literature. It was also longlisted for the First Nation Communities Read Award.

Journal of a Travelling Girl is set on the Tłįchǫ ancestral lands in the NWT. It’s a coming of age story of a young girl who goes on the annual Tłįchǫ canoe trip retracing the trails of their ancestors on their way to the celebrations of 2005 for the effective date of the Tłįchǫ Agreement. The book follows three best friends and their adventures on the journey. The teachings mainly come from one of the girl’s grandparents through stories they share around the fire about their traditional way of life, Treaty 11 and the subsequent self-government agreement. Themes of the book include friendship, community, grief/loss, healing, personal growth and connection to the natural world. Neema was asked to write this book by John B Zoe, Tłı̨chǫ leader and former chief negotiator of the Tłı̨chǫ Agreement. The illustrations were done by Archie Beaverho.

Neema began working in the Tłįchǫ community of Wekweètì, NWT in 1999, first as a community manager, then assisting with land claims negotiations. She has maintained a strong bond with the community through workshops, photography projects, and canoe trips. Neema also leads creativity, song-writing, poetry, storytelling and public speaking workshops in schools to empower youth to find their own voice. Her third studio album, Painting My Wall Gold was released in March of 2016. It was recorded while Neema was pregnant with her son, and produced with Daryl Johnson (Daniel Lanois) and Mark Howard (Bob Dylan, The Wailin’ Jennys).  It is a beautiful, sophisticated, globally infused, and electronically enhanced album of modern folk music that draws heavily on themes of acceptance and equanimity.  Neema’s lyrics, poetic in their ambiguity and sprinkled with visual metaphors and spiritual allusions, transcend the personal triumphs and tragedies that gave them life, evoking instead the raw emotional essence of the situations that inspired them.   

Her second album Watching You Think was released in June 2010 and was produced with Leonard Cohen and long-time Sarah McLachlan collaborator Pierre Marchand. The Globe and Mail called it “A stunner." Cohen also drew a portrait of her as the album’s cover and has said of her “in the midst of all the static, a voice of true feeling arises - a rare event”.

She spent 2010 and 2011 touring with her band.  After launch shows in Montreal, New York and Los Angeles, appearances at Folk Alliance in Memphis and Austin’s South by South-West, Neema toured as a support act for Jesse Winchester through the USA.  She performed over 150 shows that year, then in the summer of 2011 Neema headed out on a tour of Europe that would see her and the band play twenty-two shows across thirteen countries. As well as her headline performances, she had the honor of opening shows for Joe Cocker, Jeff Beck, Lyle Lovett and Elton John. She also opened for and sang with Cindy Lauper.

She released a digital collection of live recordings from those tours, Leave the Light On, in 2014.

Background and Debut

Born in Montreal of Egyptian and Lebanese decent, Neema’s presence on and off stage is powerful and charismatic, and her voice is honest and unique. She has traveled much of the world, sharing time with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala and Mother Teresa at the Mother House in Calcutta, as well as working with the tribal elders of Wekweeti, an isolated First Nation community in northern Canada.

She lived in Egypt in 1999, learning more about her roots and nurturing her passion for music.  She studied classical voice training with Mme Titie Sid Ahmed and classical guitar with renowned musician Mohammed Emad El Edin.  She also worked with street children teaching them English through music.  By the end of that year Neema returned to Canada and moved to Wekweeti where she was the First Nation's Band Manager until the end of 2001. She then continued working for the Dogrib Treaty 11 Council assisting in the Tłįchǫ land claim and self-government negotiations until their effective date in 2005.

These experiences greatly enriched Neema and inspired much of her music and writings.  She released her first album Masì Cho in 2006. The Montreal Gazette described Neema’s music as “…a gentle call to arms for freedom and an invitation to unfasten the chains we wrap around ourselves.” The album received wonderful reviews and had her touring through Canada, USA, UK and Australia.

Neema has had vocal studies with Rhiannon, Karen Young and Murielle Matteau. She has also returned to Wekweeti to teach workshops to the youth and to Egypt to perform at the first anniversary of the revolution. And she’s completed several 10-day canoe trips with the Tłįchǫ, retracing the steps of their ancestors. She spends her free time gardening and painting.

Neema insuffle la vie aux histoires qu’elle immortalise dans un séduisant agencement musical de type folk contemporain.  Elle a voyagé un peu partout dans le monde, elle a été gestionnaire de communauté autochtone et elle a été soutenue par Léonard Cohen. Elle a aussi attiré l’attention d’autres grands noms tels qu’Emmylou Harris qui l’assiste comme choriste, Pierre Marchand et Daryl Johnson qui ont assuré la production. Journal of a Travelling Girl est un roman historique pour les 9 à 12 ans. Un chef Tłįchǫ lui a demandé de l'écrire pour enseigner aux jeunes cette période importante de l'histoire où ils sont devenus leur propre gouvernement autonome et propriétaires de leurs terres. C’est l’histoire d'une jeune fille qui fait le voyage annuel en canoë des Tłįchǫ suivant les traces de leurs ancêtres, en route vers les célébrations de 2005, date d'entrée en vigueur de l'accord des Tłįchǫ. Le livre suit trois meilleures amies et leurs aventures au cours de ce voyage. Les enseignements proviennent principalement des grands-parents, à travers les histoires qu'ils partagent autour du feu sur leur mode de vie traditionnel lorsqu'ils étaient nomades (ces histoires ont été racontées à Neema par les aînés de la communauté de Wekweeti, NT, lorsqu’elle y vivait), le Traité 11 et l'accord d'autonomie gouvernementale qui s'en est suivi. Les thèmes abordés dans le livre sont l'amitié, la communauté, la perte, la guérison, la croissance personnelle et le lien avec le monde naturel. 

Le troisième album studio de Neema, Painting My Wall Gold, a été lancé le 4 mars 2016. Il a été enregistré pendant que Neema était enceinte de son fils et a été produit par Daryl Johnson (Daniel Lanois) et Mark Howard (Bob Dylan, The Wailin Jennys). En guise d’introduction, elle nous propose For You, une pièce inspirée par la méditation du metta bouddhiste, qui consiste à souhaiter amour et bonté à ceux qui nous entourent. Neema nous livre un album somptueux et sophistiqué de 11 morceaux pétri d’influences musicales provenant des quatre coins du globe et rehaussé de touches électroniques. Avec le flair et la capacité d’arrangement méthodique auxquels on reconnaît les meilleurs auteurs-compositeurs, Neema y décline les thèmes de l’acceptation et de la quête de sérénité. Riches en ambiguïtés poétiques, parcourues de métaphores visuelles et d’allusions spirituelles, les paroles des chansons de Neema transcendent les triomphes et les tragédies qui jalonnent son cheminement personnel pour aller droit à l’essence émotionnelle des situations auxquelles elle a été confrontée.   

Sa carrière musicale a reçu un coup de pouce de Leonard Cohen qui, après une rencontre fortuit qui en a fait son ami et son mentor, a en plus coréalisé son deuxième album, Watching You Think, avec Pierre Marchand, collaborateur de longue date de Sarah McLachlan. Le quotidien The Globe and Mail a décrit cet album comme étant « de toute beauté ». Cohen a également dessiné un portrait d’elle pour la couverture de son album, soutenant que « au milieu du monde de la musique qui peut parfois stagner, jaillit une voix sincère – événement rare. »

Entre 2010 et 2011, elle a effectué une tournée de plus de 150 spectacles avec son groupe. Elle a aussi fait une tournée avec Jesse Winchester comme artiste de soutien à travers les États-Unis. Durant l’été 2011, Neema a participé à une tournée supplémentaire à raison de 22 spectacles à travers 13 pays d’Europe. En plus d’avoir figurée comme tête d’affiche pour de nombreux spectacles, elle a eu la chance de participer à l’ouverture des spectacles de Joe Cocker, Jeff Beck, Cyndi Lauper et Elton John. En 2014, elle a lancé Leave The Light On, enregistré durant ses tournées.

Ces expériences qui ont beaucoup enrichi Neema ont inspiré sa musique et son écriture. Elle a lancé son premier album Masi Cho en 2006.

Neema a poursuit l’étude du chant auprès de Rhiannon, de Karen Young et de Murielle Matteau. Elle est également retournée à Wekweètì pour y donner des ateliers d’écriture de chansons aux jeunes et s’est rendue en Égypte pour chanter à l’occasion du premier anniversaire de la révolution. Elle a aussi fait plusieurs fois le périple en canot de dix jours avec des membres de la Première Nation Tlicho, retraçant le chemin parcouru par leurs ancêtres.
